"A note on the color..." 2009-05-07
By Susan Tunis (San Francisco, CA)
I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I agonized over which Kindle 2 cover to purchase. Like most people, I don't have the disposable income to purchase a complete wardrobe for my reading device. These accessories can quickly add up! So, I wanted to make a good choice.

To be honest, I really liked the idea of a cover that opened like a book. I ultimately picked the M-Edge Platform Jacket because, as other's have mentioned, the functionality of being able to stand the Kindle up for easy reading at meals and other times trumped any aesthetic consideration. Also, I really liked the idea of being able to have the (not-yet-available) M-Edge book light integrated right into the cover. Cost was also a consideration. This option seemed nicer than the basic Amazon cover, but is still one of the more moderate choices.

While I just said that functionality trumps looks, I have to admit that the color was a big issue for me. I love colors, and the shade of blue in the photos is fabulous. But everyone kept writing that the color shown is not accurate. I really wanted to know what to expect. Well, I'd call it more of a cyan than a teal, and I think it's really gorgeous. To help others visualize the true color, I went to the Pantone color chart--which you can easily google.

Scroll down to Pantone 301. Holding up my cover to the screen, that's the closest color to it. That little swatch looks somewhat dull, but it looks really great in leather. Oh, BTW, my leather is not shiny at all, and seems to be holding up well to wear and tear as I schlep the thing everywhere.

In conclusion, I really couldn't be happier with my choice from the standpoint of looks, protection, and utility.

"This would make a good "dock", and stands well, but it's too big otherwise" 2009-05-06
By Carolyn D. Perry (Boston, MA, USA)
I bought this cover because I wanted the steno configuration so the kindle would stand upright. It does that well, but I hate the extra ~inch on the left. It's surprising how often it makes the difference in whether the Kindle fits someplace. This would be a perfectly adequate cover to use at home like a dock for a laptop, or in a briefcase, but it's so much more cumbersome that I often take the cover off rather than put up with it.

The smooth leather finish does have a nice feature as it turns out -- it's very tacky, so the Kindle doesn't slide off the car seat easily.

I kept this cover because I thought the light would fit in the space, but the light in the "often bought together" link sure doesn't fit at all, and the light that fits in theory doesn't seem to be available yet.

I do like to hold it by opening the cover all the way and putting the tab in from the back, then slipping my hand between the covers. I can hold it like that with one hand with very little effort.

The workmanship is excellent, but I still it fit the Kindle.

 "It's okay for now" 2009-04-18
By Linda Dalton (Las Vegas, NV USA)
Great color, terrific concept however I wish that they would have used velcro for the closure as opposed to the current design of inserting the tab in the narrow space provided. It bends and eventually will probably not work as well. I have already added a piece of velcro and am much happier. Put it this way, it is way better than the one sold by Amazon.com.

 "Beautiful!" 2009-03-29

I received my Sapphire Blue Kindle 2 cover about two weeks sooner than expected. It's a beautiful color and a high-quality product (the Kindle 2 fits securely in the diagonal tabs). I'm very pleased!!!

"this cover is exactly the right one for me." 2009-03-28
By anonymer Feigling (The Midwest, USA)
when i first saw this cover i really hated the idea of the 'steno-pad'-type configuration. but after thinking about it for several days, i ended up ordering the platform cover for two reasons.

1. i *need* my kindle to stand up sometimes. cooking. eating a sandwich. knitting.. and 2. i am a heavy keyboard annotator; i thumb-type on my kindle2 with my hands in 'text-messaging' position. so in the end i did not want the cover to fold on the left.

now that i have the cover in hand, i know that i have made the correct choice.

re. standing the cover. one can flip the cover back, stick the end of the closure tab into its slot/pocket with the cover inside out, and it will stand. this places the device at a fairly upright angle. at this point, the fold can be futzed with. talley (above) has noted elsewhere (?) that if the closure tab is left loose, one can achieve a steeper angle. this has been my experience as well, so i consider the standing angle to be a more or less adjustable feature.

the front and back covers are both very stiff, fairly thick boards. this was a desired feature; if it had come in at all squishy and flexible, i'd have sent it back. i wanted this for screen protection.

the cover is lined with a fuzzly light-grey synthetic suede. i believe the lining color is the same for all of the m-edge k2 covers. this lining is a good thing, as it helps to keep the device from sliding around. it sits securely in its corners. if the cover is folded back completely, the fake suede also keeps the k2 in its cover from falling off of one's lap.

i ordered 'sapphire', so it would stand out. (don't want to sit on it by accident.) to my eye it seems to be quite a saturated, deep turquoise; depending on the light it can also look teal-blue. it is far more blue than green, but is not as luminous as it appears on the amazon site -- for those who care. i didn't. note: it is really really shiny. i kind of hope this will change as it ages. it also smells a bit; i've heard that this should dissipate.

the cover measures 6-3/8" x 8-3/4" (roughly 16.5 x 22.5cm), and is juuuust shy of 1" (2.5cm) thick. so get out your tape measure. the photos online make it look far narrower. weight is 1 lb 3-3/4 oz., or ca. 562g with k2 (and no light yet) inside. mine fits just fine in my normal (not very big) bag along with my other stuff.

the cover is about 1" (2.5cm) wider than the kindle as one looks at it -- to the left of the device. this space is for storing the m-edge e-luminator light (in product picture here @amazon) (sold separately). that is being re-designed. i plan to order one. to hold the light, there is a pocket under the kindle toward the top where a tab on the light assembly will slide in -- presumably. i've heard that some people who have no plans to get the light hold the device by that edge, in their left hand, while reading. the inside of the front cover has a large pocket and a small pocket, both opening to the same side. neither is expandable. there's a black elastic pen-loop at the top, at the cover-fold above where the kindle rides.

i ordered without a very good idea what to expect, as i ordered before very many people had them for the k2. i learned more from people who started receiving theirs during my 3-week wait for my cover to arrive.

for my needs, it is pretty perfect.
